Your PAC will soon be sending home some information regarding a planned "Read-a-Thon" for the week of March 3-7th. This activity will serve as a fundraiser for the school with students collecting pledges in support of their efforts. We are also planning a "book collection" that week to gather resources that will be re-distributed to lower mainland families who are in need. There may also be an evening event to celebrate this initiative but that will be confirmed in the coming weeks. It should be a lot of fun and we'll have more details released soon.MEETING WITH TEACHERS
If you wish to meet with a teacher or visit a classroom, please be sure to set up an appointment prior to arriving at the school. As well, we would ask that visitors report to the office before heading to the classroom. Parents are always welcome at Hawthorne but impromptu visits can be disruptive to classroom routines. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES
We will be hosting our student-led conferences on Feb. 19th and 20th. As we get closer to the date, parents will be provided with instructions on how to book their appointment online through Parent Connect.. This will be a first for us but should make this process more efficient for everyone involved.
ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS TOURNAMENT
We held our Rock, Paper, Scissors final on Friday, January 10th. There were over 250 participants in this tournament and we managed to pare the group down to a primary finalist (Demetri Boufeas) and an intermediate finalist (Lukas Zhanel). It was an exciting finish with Demetri eventually crowned as the 2014 Champion. Thank you to all of the participants and the enthusiastic audience that cheered them on.
TALENT SHOW
Within the next few weeks we will be meeting with interested students to discuss plans for Hawthorne's 2014 Talent Show. In the meantime, we want students and families to be aware of the date so that they can plan accordingly. Our show this year will be held at 1:30pm on Friday, March 14th. Please note that performances will be limited to approximately 1 minute in length and more details will be shared soon.

This full-day conference will be held on Friday, February, 21st at Seaquam Secondary in North Delta and is open to participants from grades 4-12. This event take place on a Professional Day and families will have to arrange their own transportation and supervision (one adult per six students). WHEELS / DOGS ON THE PLAYGROUND
Please note, for safety reasons, that students are prohibited from riding their scooters, bikes, skateboards, etc. while on the playground. Families are also reminded to keep their dogs on a tight leash when visiting the school grounds. We have some students who are dog allergic while others have a fear of canines. Thank you for your attention to these matters.
BOTTLE DRIVEPlease note out Grade 7's will be conducting a bottle drive this weekend in an effort to offset the costs associated with skiing and year-end activities. Here are some options for you:
1. Leave on curbside with a note for Hawthorne Bottle Drive
2. Drop them off at Hawthorne school from 9-1pm on Jan. 25th

UBC RESEARCH
A U.B.C. Research team is in need of parents and their 8-12 year old son with ADHD. This group is conducting a student on how boys with ADHD think about their social interactions compared to boys without. This would require 60 minutes of your time at the Parenting Lab on the campus of U.B.C. or spent in your home with research assistants.
