June 22nd

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
We have just completed another great year at Hawthorne and my final year at this school.  I have very much enjoyed my time here connecting with so many students, staff members and parents.  Thankfully, Ms. Fisher will be returning to our school next year to continue some of the great traditions and work with the community to create new ones.

During this school year, our PAC once again played a key role in our success by hosting some very successful community events (Walk to School, Movie Nights, Holiday socials, Spring Fair, etc) and fostering such a positive school spirit.  The fundraising efforts have also allowed our students to enjoy cultural events,  field trips, greater access to technology and a growing “maker space” in our library.  I am very thankful for the extraordinary efforts of our PAC and the support of the entire parent community.

Our staff has also proven to be up for the challenge in a very unique year.  For the first time we were implementing an entirely new curriculum along with a new reporting system.  I am very proud to have worked alongside such a committed group of professionals who are driven by an ethic of caring.  Special thanks to Ms. Wyatt, Ms. Fisher and Ms. Wilson who provided such great support and leadership in the role of vice-principal during my time at this school.

Finally, I would like to recognize the students at Hawthorne who, quite frankly, are the best part of my day.  While challenges arose, I enjoyed being involved with the social development of our students and being able to witness first hand the growth that has occurred in 6 years.   As I head off to a new role in education,  it will be the student interactions that I will miss most: smiles, hellos, thoughtful conversations, youthful wonder and random hugs. Thank you students for making my time at Hawthorne so rewarding.  Ms. Fisher is going to enjoy her experience as your new principal.

Yours truly,

M. Carruthers
Principal

RETURN TO SCHOOL
Please note the following points with regard to our September start-up plans:
  • The first day of school is Tuesday, September 5th  from  9am – noon.
  • Kindergarten students will be working on a graduated entry as per the letter sent to families
  • Students will be returning to their 2016-2017 classrooms for the first day
  • New students will report to the gymnasium
  • IMPORTANT:  Due to the new Ministry of Education guidelines on class size and composition,  it is very unlikely that students will be placed into their 2017-2018 classes before the second week of school.  Thank you in advance for your patience.
We have also posted our calendar and school supply list on our website (http://ha.deltasd.bc.ca).  Feel free to contact Ms. Fisher (tfisher@deltasd.bc.ca) over the summer if you should have any further questions.
